Depression
The term “depression” can be used to describe feelings of sadness, hopelessness and despair. Sometimes these feelings may be related to a particular life event such as a marriage break-down or bereavement, or they may be more to do with a general dissatisfaction with oneself or our life.
Often such feelings are a normal reaction to a crisis or loss, but may be worrying or difficult to manage. They may impact on our ability to function at home and at work. Truce can help to support clients during such times, and develop strategies to assist people through these sometimes very painful periods in their lives.
Sometimes depressed feelings can become persistent and pervasive, affectingr emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. This is what’s generally meant by the terms “clinical depression” and “major depressive illness”. Symptoms of a depression illness can include sleep disturbance, anxiety and agitation, loss of interest and pleasure in everyday activities, tiredness and fatigue, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness.
It is important to know that anyone is capable of experiencing depression, and that it is treatable.
Our Counselling Psychologist, Truce Wright helps clients to explore the factors that may have created their vulnerability and triggered negative reactions. Truce will use proven psychological strategies to help clients to learn skills and implement strategies to change negative thinking patterns and beliefs, and change the behaviours that are maintaining the depression.
